June Fitness: progress, not perfection.

exercise-log

If you’ve been around Compendium before, you know my goal: To be a good steward of this body God has blessed me with.

Because my personal fitness history shows I can’t be trusted and that I desperately need the motivation of accountability, I put my June fitness goals out here on the internet and have been blogging, facebooking and tweeting my progress.

How did I do? I didn’t meet all my goals.

again.

But I’m STRONGER than I was a month ago!

June Totals
6.5% Incline Miles Walked: 52 – GOAL!
Strength Training/Yoga Days: 0 (FAIL. NOT. ONE. DAY. Sad and pitiful.)
2 Minute Planks: 30 – GOAL!
Back Extensions: 300 – GOAL!
BOSU Pushups: 300 – GOAL!
Tricep Reps: 315 – EXCEEDED GOAL BY 15!
Oblique Crunches: 205 (not on the goal list, just working on the love handles)
Days Supplements Taken: 16 (14 days short of goal)
Fruit Servings: 34 (26 short of goal)

(See the daily JUNE ENTRIES HERE)

I’ve just about decided on July’s goals and I’ve decided I need to shorten the window of accountability from a month to a week, so I’ve also decided to join Ragamuffin Soul (Carlos Whitaker) and An Idol Heart (Grant Jenkins) in their 12 week quest to “get their sexy back.”

They’re asking for WEEKLY check-ins. It appears I need that, or I may continue in my pattern of slacking an entire week and flippin KILLING myself to make it up. I’m slightly stubborn.

(“sexyback11?” I know. Guys can relate ANYthing to sex, even exercise and dieting) Kind of annoying that every post is supposed to have the “sexyback11″ hashtag. I have to override my computer’s parental controls EVERY time I read someone’s sexyback11 update.)

eek! only two days left…

exercise-log

to meet my June fitness goals!

If you’ve been around Compendium before, you know my goal: To be a good steward of this body God has blessed me with.

Here’s
(1) where I am and
(2) what I need to do within the next two days if I have ANY hope of meeting my goals:

June Totals as of 6/28
Incline Miles Walked: 46 (need 6 more miles)
Strength Training/Yoga Days: 0 (need 8 – obviously not gonna happen)
2 Minute Planks: 26 (need 4 more)
Back Extensions: 265 (need 35 more)
BOSU Pushups: 250 (need 50 more)
Tricep Reps: 280 (need 20 more)
Oblique Crunches: 180 (not on the goal list, just working on the love handles)
Days Supplements Taken: 15 (didn’t make this goal, seriously, how hard is this?)
Fruit Servings: 28 (wanted to be at 60 for the month)

(See the daily JUNE ENTRIES HERE)

I’m already thinking about July’s goals and I’m thinking about joining Ragamuffin Soul (Carlos Whitaker) and An Idol Heart (Grant Jenkins) in their 12 week quest to “get their sexy back.”

(it would seem that guys can relate ANYthing to sex, even exercise and dieting) I have to override my computer’s parental controls every time I read someone’s update because they’re using the hashmark “sexyback11″ on everything!

exercise make-up day: 4:11pm

Check out this morning’s “exercise make-up day: 10:47am” post to see how the morning went…

2:41pm
arrrgg. I got on the treadmill too late to complete my next 2 miles. I’m only at 1.39 miles (in 24 minutes). Have to leave the house to pick up PinkGirl from play rehearsal and finish up when I get back.
But I’m okay with that. I could have looked at the clock and blown off the 1.39 miles because I couldn’t finish my goal of walking 2.

3:34pm
Back on the treadmill as soon as I returned home. Finished up that 2nd mile . . . and, since I was already on the treadmill, I added another mile.

4:07pm
Finished my second “make-up” set of strength training exercises for the day.
10 BOSU push-ups,
15 tricep reps,
15 back extentions,
15 oblique crunches.

Running Total for Today: Walked 5 interval, (6.5) incline miles, 20 BOSU push-ups, 30 tricep reps, 30 back extentions, 30 oblique crunches…(so far, day’s not over!)

Got to get some more “real” work done before 5pm. Then, round three!

Who else is working on being a good steward of these bodies God has blessed us with today?

exercise make-up day: 10:47am

8:30am – Declaration!
I’ve slacked all week on being a good steward of this body God has blessed me with.

Didn’t want to, but got dressed in workout clothes first thing. Today must be a catch up day. MUST.
The plan is to nick away at it all day. at least 6 miles, two at a time. along with the push-ups, tricep kickbacks, back extensions and oblique crunches.

there. I’ve typed it out loud. now I have to do it.

10:25am – accountability update
Two (6.5) incline miles down. (interval miles, even!)
TMI: if I’m going to spread these workouts over my entire day, I’m gonna need to include showers in the plan. “glistening” is for wimps.

10:47 – accountability update
10 BOSU push-ups,
15 tricep reps,
15 back extentions,
15 oblique crunches.

Got to get some “work” work done now. Then, round two!

Who else is working on being a good steward of these bodies God has blessed us with today?

PinkGirl’s conundrum: curiosity vs. aversion to learning

Nothing like a new washing machine to make me feel compelled to clean my laundry room…

Last night:
I’m currently observing the “no helping, no complaining” rule of our household.
Round One: Two guys vs. an outgoing dead washing machine.
Round Two: Two guys vs. an incoming craigslist washing machine.
I just have two questions: Where’s my camcorder? and
Is AFV still on the air or is it just in reruns?

Later:
I decided to keep my distance lest I be recruited. I’m no dummy.

A little later:
PinkGirl, inspecting our “new” top load washer: “Mom, I don’t understand this. How does it work?”
Me: “oh, don’t worry, I’ll teach you!”
(I am SO glad to have a top load washer again! Now, when I need to throw in just one more thing, I can get the door open! and if someone accidentally washes an ipod, we can fish it out before it goes through the entire wash cycle while we stand helplessly by and watch it.)

Even later:
PinkGirl just opened the new top load washing machine to watch it spin and it came to a stop: “Mom, I still don’t get it. How does it actually CLEAN the clothes?”
Me: (it was 10:15pm for cryin out loud): “Ask your dad.”
PinkGirl, under her breath: “I really don’t want to hear ‘geek talk’ right now.”

This morning:
This morning PinkGirl asked me AGAIN how our new top load washer cleans the clothes.
Me: “you know, I got two comments on facebook suggesting you look it up yourself.”
PinkGirl: “I don’t wanna LEARN! It’s SUMMER!”
Me: “Then why are you asking questions?”
PinkGirl: “cuz I’m bored.”
Me: “oh, I can help you with THAT.”

if I can’t work, I might as well sing.

yesterday:
trying to code merge forms for a client. clearly, I need diet coke and gum.

yo, cat: get your face OFF of my keyboard. bum.

this morning:
PinkGirl and FavoriteSon out of the house: check.
quiet, with “no interruption” potential: check.
Diet Coke: check.
gum: check.
client server access: sigh. their gateway is down.
prayer journal: check.

this afternoon:
come on computer. MAN up!
I need to open another program now, so don’t be such a little girl!
Lord. Momma needs a new computer. Please, please bless me with more compensated work. A firm-wide client computer upgrade project would be EXCELLENT.

computer. you disappoint me. just reboot already.

later this afternoon:
Bad: Reinstalling software.
Good: $10 Software Download Insurance I bought.
Bad: My computer really needs to be completely wiped & reloaded, not just this 1 software program.
Good: Trying to focus on the good, because the thought of completely reinstalling my main work computer…don’t want to think about it.
Could be worse, so THANK YOU LORD that I have a no cost, although time intensive, option & backup computers!

a few minutes ago:
alright. who filled up my inbox when I wasn’t looking?
(please do NOT send me an email telling me YOU did)
Down to 1,418. don’t judge me.

Between multiple reboots, troubleshooting, uninstalling and reinstalling software – not to mention client server problems, I obviously wasn’t accomplishing much work using the computer, I decided to play this week’s praise team music on repeat all day while I waited. I think I might know these songs now…

“a jacket is like wearing a hug.”

One of my yoga buddies said that. Thank you Kathy for that gem.

This week, it’s been in the 90s with a heat index pushing into the 100s.

So is it weird that I’m so tired I want to turn the air conditioning down to 60 and curl up in my old navy fleece jacket with a cat in my lap and listen to the rain?

Going to PinkGirl’s dance show at 7pm instead.

Then taking the kids to Del Taco because they’ve been NAGGING me to take them all week. (do yourself a favor and do NOT Google Del Taco nutritional information. seriously)

Then taking FavoriteSon to Walmart to get him a fishing license because he’s turned 16 since he last went fishing.

Then can I come home and do nothing?

June 17, 2011 Posted by | Uncategorized | 1 Comment

three clues.

I admit it. I am tired. The hubs has been out of town since Sunday and I haven’t slept well. Combine that with the fact that I was the only on-duty go-to parent 24-7 all week and my children have worn me as thin as a 10 year old flip flop. I. am. tired.

Here’s what I will be unable to respond to with grace today:
entitlement.
sarcasm.
yeahbuts. (excuses)

So if you witness me abruptly end an interpersonal interaction with with someone today, I just gave you three clues as to why.

The customer rep from Wells Fargo didn’t see it coming. I wonder if it matters that her sarcasm was recorded “for my protection.”

She thought I was trapped. That I had to do whatever she said, no matter how time consuming or task intensive on my part. She operated on the assumption that I had no other options and that she was under no obligation to give me any reasons. Because she didn’t explain anything – from why any of the steps were necessary to what would happen after each step, she left me with the impression that she was following a checklist. A checklist she didn’t understand.

Left me with NO confidence in her authority. The fact that she was condescending and sarcastic only strengthened my impression that she was insecure in that authority.

After she was finished telling me every step I had to do in order to access my account information now that my accounts have been switched from Wachovia, I told her I was going to table the process and take the weekend to think about whether I wanted to continue banking with Wells Fargo.

I think she was surprised. She actually stopped talking for a few seconds and then gave me a “yes, but…”

Since she was still exhibiting the same poor listening skills, I repeated myself, encouraged her to have a great weekend and freed myself from the conversation.

ahhhhh.

This isn’t my main checking account. I use it for convenience. Not so convenient right now. There’s nothing special about their services. And in order for me to be their customer I have to jump through a bunch of hoops. And I’m tired. No hoop jumping for me today, especially when the jumping instructions are being barked at me from someone who’s lost my confidence and respect. After I get some rest, I’ll probably decide to call back again. I’m betting I’ll get a different customer service rep the next time I call. If sarcasm and a condescending attitude are served up a second time…

buh. bye.

Picking Up FirstHusband from the airport at 4:30pm. THANK YOU GOD. He’s been gone since Sunday and my children have worn me as thin as a 10 year old flip flop.

I fell 2 more miles behind on the walking today. I have no good excuse. Not even gonna try to make one up or lie to myself. Just poor time management.

fitness update: 6/15/11

exercise-log

If you’ve been around Compendium before, you know my goal: To be a good steward of this body God has blessed me with.

I fell behind on my June fitness goals on the very first day of the month and I’ve been struggling to catch up every day since then.

I REFUSE TO GIVE UP!!! As long as it’s still June, I still have a chance.

Today, I was able to double my daily walking goal, but at the end of the evening, I found myself short a two minute plank and 5 BOSU pushups.

ugh.

I wanted to go to bed. But I KNEW that if I could just handle a lousy two and a half minutes, I could go to bed without waking up disappointed that I allowed myself to fall even further behind.

So I just got it done.

06/15/11 – Walked 4 miles (6.5 incline), 1 two minute plank, 10 BOSU push-ups, 10 tricep reps, 10 back extensions, 10 oblique crunches (See ALL JUNE ENTRIES HERE)

June Totals as of 6/15
Incline Miles Walked: 24 (should be at 30)
Flat Miles Walked: 2
Strength Training/Yoga Days: 0 (should be at 4)
2 Minute Planks: 12 (should be at 15)
Back Extensions: 140 (should be at 150)

I couldn’t believe it, but PinkGirl voluntarily took a nap this afternoon!

Either “I WIN!” the “whoever wears out first, LOSES” game or she’s getting sick.

Either way, THANK YOU GOD, she really needed the rest – and I needed a tiny little bit of solitude.

I let PinkGirl get in a full 90 minute sleep cycle, making me 30 minutes late picking up FavoriteSon from work.

FavoriteSon, entering his time into the calendar: “hmmm. I stopped working at 2:40, but SOMEONE didn’t pick me up until 3pm.”

Me: “I brought you chicken alfredo and a Sport Illustrated, what, do you want me to bring you slippers too?”

FavSon: “now that you mention it…”

I’m bored with driving. I want to learn to drift.

It seems it takes 20 minutes to get everywhere. And my “free” pockets of time today are logistically non-functional.

8:40am – drive PinkGirl to dance camp
9:20 – home
10:00 – drive FavSon to work
10:20 – home
11:40 – go pick up PinkGirl from dance camp
12:20 – home
2:00 – go pick up FavSon from work
2:40 – home
Hopefully, I can squeeze in a workout/rehearsal on the treadmill before making dinner and heading out to praise team rehearsal tonight at 7pm. I hope I can fit a shower in there somewhere…

I don’t know if I could cut my drive time down, but at least the 20 would be more fun if I could learn to drift in a minivan…

5 minutes for petrified croutons & other science experiments.

This post proves that I will do anything to distract myself while trying to get through the last half mile of a 5 mile catch-up walk on the treadmill at a 6.5 incline…

As usual, I don’t have time to devote a full day (or 7) to concentrated cleaning, so I’m once again applying my long time practice of microactions to tackle deep cleaning my kitchen.

The recent “worms in the fridge” episode has me focused on cleaning my refrigerator. You’d think that the shelf with the worms on it would get my attention, but no. The drawer that was so stuffed it wouldn’t open gets first dibs. I had 5 minutes, so I completely emptied and cleaned it out.

Includes emptying out the drawer (including the loose, petrified croutons) cleaning the drawer bottom, searching for science experiments and tossing them out, combining the contents of multiple open packages of the same items and reloading the drawer – leaving out the food that shouldn’t have been in there in the first place.

Here’s the photo documentary of this exciting event:

And my theory is that nobody really wants to see the science experiments that were discovered and discarded, but if I’m wrong, HERE THEY ARE.

What can you clean in 5 minutes?

worms & dirt. and I’m not talkin gummy & oreo.

Leftover worms and dirt in my fridge.

REAL worms. alive and wiggling. in black, muddy, crumbly dirt that is pushing itself up and out through the air holes on the lid as the worms wiggle around, presumably trying to escape.

gross.

When I was growing up, it never occurred to me that worms might live in my refrigerator.

FirstHusband and PinkGirl bought the worms today for fishing in the river behind our house this afternoon. They had a great time and thankfully came back with nothing because they threw back the fish they caught. I’m really glad they had fun. (I’m also glad they threw back the fish they caught.) I just wish they had used all their bait instead of putting their little friends in the fridge, along with our food.

gross.

I don’t like worms in my refrigerator. Some might call me a city girl, but that label doesn’t fit. I’m FIRMLY a suburban girl.

A suburban girl with a question: How long will I have to keep worms in my refrigerator before I can throw them out? What is the life expectancy of a worm?

well, that experiment was a dismal failure…

For a few years, I’ve been logging my fitness progress on the internet. In March of this year, I decided to try setting specific fitness goals at the beginning of the month and logging them on the internet, hoping to make myself even more accountable.

I’ve got a fitness log, a side bar widget for running monthly totals, and I post my daily progress on my facebook fan page and in my twitter feed.

Last month, I didn’t set any specific goals. I thought that I could just go back to logging my progress and see how I did at the end of the month.

pit. i. ful.

Not only did I not consistently log my fitness progress, I worked out less consistently than ever.

sad. and pitiful.

clearly, I cannot be trusted.

So, I’m back to stated goals for this month. After much thought, here’s what I’m going for in the month of June:

GoalWalk 52 miles this month – an average of 2 miles per day, with one day off per week. (I’m going for air-conditioned, treadmill miles at a 6.5 incline.)

Goal300 Balance Ball Back Extensions – that’s 10 per day. (I’m bored with the 1 minute Supermans I’ve been doing.)

Goal - 30 two Minute Forearm Planks average one per day. (I’ve GOT to keep these up! It took me over a YEAR to build up to two minutes, I refuse to slip backward on this.)

Goal300 BOSU pushups – that’s 10 push-ups per day.

Goal - 300 Dips or Kickbacks (tricep work) – average 10 per day.

These are my minimum DAILY goals and if I miss a day, my plan is to make it up as soon as possible!

Goal2 HOURS of Yoga per week. If I miss my favorite class with Body In Unity, I have to settle for Brighthouse Exercise on Demands (FREE) on Central Florida Channel 306.

WHY am I doing this? Because just a few short years ago, I couldn’t. I’ve been given a second chance to take care of this body God has blessed me with and I’m determined to be a good steward of it. Did I mentioned I was DETERMINED?

I would LOVE it if you would join me in fitness accountability by commenting either here or on the facebook page and letting me know your progress too!

Still lurking around, thinking about the possibility of making small changes in your day to get healthier? I want to encourage you to set a reasonable, sustainable fitness goal for yourself for the month of June and (here’s the key) make yourself accountable to someone! If you do it, let me know how it’s going and I’ll pray for you!

If you currently have an inactive lifestyle, consider exercising 1 minute a day. ONE minute. And (here’s that key again) make yourself accountable to someone who will support and encourage you! (If you exercise for ONE minute per day for a week, tell me and then I’ll tell you why I only challenged you to work out for ONE minute)
