ebay or give away

I haven’t listed anything on eBay for MONTHS. But yesterday the storms were TERRIBLE and I had the computers unplugged. With no internet access and with the momentum from cleaning out PinkGirl’s room still going strong, I decided to tackle a few piles in my office. I boxed up a LOT of stuff to give away, but found this and thought I’d try out the new (well new to me because I haven’t listed in so long) eBay seller interface. (When this doesn’t sell, you’ll see why I give so much stuff to charity and why It’s Deductible is such a wonderful tool to value the items.)

You can see the actual eBay listing HERE. My eBay username is Hip2BeSquare.

I’ve been thinking about doing a few posts on eBay buying and selling for some future Works for Me Wednesdays. Any thoughts? Questions about eBay?

I’ll let Weird Al get the info flowing.

  1. That’s a great idea. I’ve thought about selling stuff on ebay before, but there’s so little basic info. And I saw that there are actually seminars on how to sell things on ebay, and that pretty much scared me away. If it requires a seminar, I just don’t have that kind of attention span.

  2. Memarie Lane, If you are planning on making a living on eBay then really research how to sell – if you just want to sell a few items, then just list them. Make sure your photos are clear and that your headline is precise. “Red pottery barn curtains pair 80″” is a great searchable headline. “Beautiful curtains, almost new” is not an easily searchable headline.

Didn’t mean to hijack your blog LOL I think talking about eBay would make an excellent WFMW post or two.

Kristin – I totally agree. Making a living selling on eBay can be a full time job – and a very intrusive one. Like with any home based business, in order to maintain some semblance of normalcy in life, you HAVE to set limits. There’s also quite a bit to learn about “best practices” for successful selling.

But selling a few items here and there isn’t too bad. The trick is knowing whether to even list something in the first place. Take the stationery I’ve listed this week. I searched “stationery” and “stationary” in completed items to see what kind of sales there were for something like that. The results seemed promising, so I thought I’d give it a shot. After two days, the item has been viewed only 25 times (not a lot) and I only have one “watcher.” I’m thinking I’m out my 35 cent listing fee. Sometimes you win (like a box of Lincoln logs for $155) and sometimes you lose. (by JSM)

  3. I’ve just been thinking about listing a few cross-stich hardback books on eBay but haven’t done any research yet, so tips would be helpful. Such as, how you determine shipping ahead of time, as I don’t have postal scales here.

In the meantime, there’s an award waiting for you over at my place, and a giveaway to enter if anything appeals to you now that you are decluttering!
